This high profile development on the site of a former bank was originally built circa 1930 and provides 10,800 m² of grade ‘A’ City office space. Due to its sensitive location opposite the Bank of England, it took over four years to achieve planning consent.
Balfour Beatty appointed Putney & Wood to carry out the external stone package for four new upper floors, while the façade on the lower six floors was retained. The new upper floors were ‘Highly Commended’ in the City Heritage Awards. The Chairman of the Panel of Assessors commented “…the refurbishment of 1, Bartholomew Lane to be highly commendable particularly in respecting the façade and in successfully reworking the buildings upper levels”. The building achieved a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.
Graham Mercer of Balfour Beatty said “The new stonework on the upper floors at 1 Bartholomew Lane was a very important part of the project. Putney & Wood’s project team had the experience and skills we needed to deliver the stonework package to the client’s satisfaction. We were happy with Putney & Wood’s performance and I wouldn’t hesitate to use them on future stone projects.”
