  • Client: Cornerstone City Developments
  • Architect: EPR
  • Contractor: Kier London
  • Stones Used: Portland Stone and Angola Black
  • Value: £750,000
  • Completed: September 2009
  • Scope of Work: External stonework dismantlement and storage, external stonework cleaning and restoration, new build external stone cladding

Situated just a few metres from the Guildhall in the City of London, the refurbishment of 30 King Street provides over 3000m2 of premier City office space. The project combined three separate buildings into one and increased the height of four floors to maximise the natural light through new floor to ceiling windows. Putney & Wood’s stonework package included cleaning and restoration; stone recycling and new build stone cladding.

To increase the floor to ceiling heights, 33 tonnes of the original Portland Stone was dismantled and taken to Putney & Wood’s factory to be evaluated, cleaned and re-worked, before being reinstated as 75mm thick cladding panels.

On the retained façade the stonework was cleaned and restored, and leadwork to the cornices was also replaced. For the new build element, Putney & Wood designed, procured and installed 260m2 of Portland Stone which framed the glazing to form the new King Street entrance.

Joe Schembri of Kier said, “This was a complicated job and the stonework was a key feature of the main elevation. From the initial design to the on site fixing, Putney & Wood’s team performed well for us. I’d be happy to work with them again”
