This classic early 20th century Portland Stone building, located at the junction between Pall Mall and Haymarket in the heart of London’s West End, underwent a major re-design and restoration programme which modernised the office space while preserving the original character of this magnificent landmark building.
Initially Putney & Wood carried out a detailed survey and careful dismantlement of the original stonework on the entire top floor including the dormers, turrets and chimneys. The original stone was then carefully transported to Putney & Wood’s factory in Grays, Essex, where each stone was meticulously evaluated, cleaned and stored before being semlessly re-instated on the newly restored façade by Putney & Wood’s team of 15 stonemasons.
In addition to the sympathetic façade restoration, which also included hand-cleaning the delicate stone cartouches, Putney & Wood also designed, procured and installed new Portland Stone cladding to an entire elevation of the ground floor.
